Every newspaper and TV station should monitor blogs that comment on local news. In fact, we should find ways to incorporate local blogs, either through rss feeds or links to some of the better blogs. Or, as you suggest, as additional eyes and ears to help inform our reporting.
At a recent seminar, I was surprised at the hands-off attitude displayed by the Web folk from a major metro toward local bloggers. I sensed that they weren't even aware how many people in their community are getting news and commentary from a small but fairly active coterie of bloggers in their midst.
It's not surprising that a lot of journalists aren't monitoring blogs. The attitude is that the bloggers are infringing on our turf. But a lot of them are just saying what they see, and to dismiss all bloggers is in some way to dismiss our audience.
I think a lot of journos look at blogs and use them as sources & inspiration, but don't admit it, like there is some kind of shame for not being "enterprising."
I view them in the IRE sense of 'small circulation journals.' I have heard IRE regularly say - take stuff from small journals, authenticate it, credit it, build on it, and offer it to a larger audience...That's how I treat blogs at work...
I have gotten some fantastic leads and analysis from them - especially from a lawyer's blog here in Florida. I always contact the blogger and thank them. So far so good...I think they should be added to traditional "beats."
Hey, you have a great blog here! I'm definitely going to bookmark you!
I have a senior advisor site. It pretty much covers financial services marketing stuff.
Come and check it out if you get time :-)
